There are so many tools for working out, it can be overwhelming to figure out which ones are actually useful. So when Matt from Fat Gripz offered us 15 pairs of their product we were interested to see if they’d work. Fat Gripz add width to dumbbell handles and barbells, the idea being when you use thicker bars you perform more work in targeted areas of your arm.

If we are going to be completely honest, we were a little bit skeptical of the Fat Gripz before they came in. Besides questioning their effectiveness, we assumed that substituting the chiseled metal grip with the hard rubber grips would be more slippery with the sweat... We were proven wrong.

The first day we tried Fat Gripz, they kicked our ass. Our first day’s Fat Gripz workout consisted of a standard bicep curl routine paired with shoulder exercises in between. Using the usual exercises and weights, we had significant trouble finishing sets and our forearms were on fire. We even had to break up the last couple sets into two or three sets each… seriously.

Other guys in the gym were looking at the bright blue rubber grips like we brought our dog to workout with us but after explaining to a few people how the grips worked (and how they were handing it to us) it quickly made sense. One local coach even asked for a pair to try with his baseball players.

Additionally, the grip on the weights was fine the whole time with no slipping at all. Then again, I wasn't power cleaning or doing anything fast and explosive so please let us know how that goes for you. .

One recommendation we would make is to get two pairs of these bad boys. If you are "super-setting" or switching between weights it can be tedious to take off the Fat Gripz and put them back on another weight. Also, if you are a football or baseball player - I highly recommend grabbing a pair of these. Besides, it'll send a message when you shake hands with the vise grip.

All in all, the Fat Gripz were a pleasant surprise and serious humbling experience when it comes to arm strength. We use them every time we lift now – the small rubber grips are easy to keep around in a gym bag or locker. Now if only they could come in TeamBuildr colors (hint)!
