Leaving my alma mater.
I didn’t know it at the time, but leaving Syracuse University after attending undergrad and grad school there and after working there as a grad assistant for the exercise science department, track & field team, and
Strength & Conditioning department was the best thing I could have done for my career at the time.
I had no intentions of returning, however, a year later I received a call from the Head S&C coach for a full-time position. After my interview, I was told that the variety of experience I gained and the success I had during the 12 months I was away from campus really made an impact on the search committee during my interview.
Additionally, from my own perspective, moving to a new city and establishing myself as a strength coach and fitness specialist boosted my confidence knowing that I truly had the skills for this job and it wasn’t just being handed to me because of my connection to the program.
